Yoga as a Spiritual Practice
At Harmony Yoga is a spiritual path, not just an exercise, although yoga certainly will relax and open tight areas of the body. The practice of yoga was developed 6000 years ago. The asanas or poses are designed to open the body so sitting in meditation can become a practice. Yoga literally means Union of the Body and Mind. A yoga practice of asansa and breath-work can guide your spiritual path toward heightened awareness and Enlightenment.
Whatever your area of stress, Harmony is sure to have a therapy or class to help you unwind and relax. Stress in the body and mind is a serious health hazard. It is a known fact that stress is the cause of most dis-ease in the body so treat yourself or buy a gift certificate for a friend or relative.
"Inhale, and God approaches you.
Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you.
Exhale, and you approach God.
Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God."
Yoga for Everybody
Harmony offers several styles of yoga for every need:
Svaroopa® Yoga decompresses your spine, which makes it possible for your body’s natural healing capacity to take over, restoring you to a natural homeostasis of health, vitality, strength and flexibility. It utilizes familiar hatha yoga postures done in a supported style. This support is key and forms the basis of the release of deep-seated inner spinal tension that can be found in young and old alike. This style of yoga also focuses on developing increasing students' levels of inner clarity, leading to increased awareness and improved concentration.
There are 5 classes a week and three different teachers. All are trained by Master Yoga. Try a class, even you think you cannot do yoga, this style will surprise and delight your body. The openings are subtle but evident in the very first class.
Beginner's Classical Hatha Yoga has added 6 classes a week (see the calendar of events for days and times). The classical yoga approach to teaching emphasizes the experience of yoga as a moving meditation, with the ultimate goal of union and wholeness. Breathing (pranayama) and meditation are integrated into the physical practice of the yoga postures (asana). Classical yoga finds its origin in Patanjali's two-thousand year-old philosophical treatise, the Yoga-Sutra. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali prescribes adherence to eight "limbs" or steps to quiet one's mind and achieve detachment. The Yoga Sutras form the theoretical and philosophical basis of Raja Yoga, and are considered to be the most organized and complete definition of that discipline. The Sutras not only provide yoga with a thorough and consistent philosophical basis, they also clarify many important concepts which are common to all traditions of Indian thought, such as karma.
Yin Yoga and More
Yin yoga is a quiet practice suitable for students of all levels of experience. Practitioners are offered an opportunity to surrender, slow down and come back to balance. Many of the poses are seated, supine or prone and are held with muscles relaxed for several minutes. The Yin parts of our body are the parts that lie closest to our core, specifically the bones and connective tissue. Muscles prefer movement and repetition and are considered the Yang parts. Remaining muscularly passive for periods of time gently stretches dense connective tissue of the lower back, hips and spine, which may otherwise become stiff and less mobile as we age. There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go. The Yin practice includes powerful mental and emotional benefits as its practitioner becomes quiet, still and mindful of the present.
The swing class is NOT on the schedule as a regular class but if you would like to experience the many advantages of doing yoga gravity free make an appointment with Marilyn for a small group or just a private class for yourself. Using a sling, hand and foot grips, this yoga is great for the core and supporting and strengthening the abdominal muscles. There is definite value to using the swing to do classical yoga or just assisted stretches without the gravitational pull of the earth on the body. Swing Yoga is relaxing and strengthening at the same time. Oh did I mention it is also great fun!!!
